Project Lead The Way

PLTW is a nationally recognized curriculum that uses an activity, project, and problem-based (APB) learning model that focuses on real-world projects that help students understand how the information and skills that they are learning in the classroom can be applied to everyday life.

The following are just some of the opportunities that are available to the PLTW students at St. Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School. These are just a sampling of opportunities that are available to students and more can be found online or by contacting various state PLTW organizations:

PLTW Scholar (PLTWCa Scholar Medallions and Certificates)

  • To earn this recognition, students must be a graduating senior who has taken at least 3 PLTW courses and have received a “B” or better in all three courses.

AP + PLTW

  • To earn this recognition, students must satisfactorily complete three course in one PLTW Pathway – one AP course such as AP Computer Science, one PLTW course such as Computer Science Essentials, and a third course, either an AP course such as AP Calculus AB or a PLTW course such as Cybersecurity – and earn a qualifying score of a 3 or higher on the AP exam(s) and a score of proficient or higher on the PLTW End of Course (EoC) assessment.

William Leonhard PLTW Scholarships

  • This annual scholarship is open to PLTW students who attend the College of Engineering at San Diego State University. Students who have participated in a high school PLTW program are eligible to apply for this renewable scholarship.

 

College/University Opportunities

  • Colleges/Universities across the United States recognize and reward PLTW students for their work in high school PLTW courses with various opportunities including scholarships, admissions preference, course credit, etc.

STEM Premier

  • STEM Premier is a social networking platform such as LinkedIn that assists all levels of STEM talent in identifying career pathways, educator in recruiting top talent to their schools, and employers in developing a stable, continuous talent pipeline. Moreover, students receive complimentary access to this system, which empowers them to build out their personal STEM profile, showcase their knowledge and skills, and seek professional opportunities.

Engineering Design Challenge

  • PLTW, Chevron, and John Deere host an annual engineering design challenge for students grades 9-11. This competition gives students the opportunity to address a problem relating to packaging and delivery and is designed to recognize and reward outstanding student projects and highlight the importance of engineering design that solves real-world problems.

CyberPatriot

  • CyberPatriot offers a yearly competition for middle and high school students who play the role of newly hired IT professionals and are tasked with the job of finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within certain systems and hardening the system while maintain critical services.

SeaPearch Competition

  • SeaPearch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources to build an underwater Remotely Operate Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting.

First Robotic Competition

  • This competition is an international high school robotics competition open to high school students who build a robot to complete a series of tasks. This is only one of the four robotics competitions operated by FRC – they also have FIRST Lego League Jr and FIRST Lego League at the elementary and middle school level and the FIRST Tech Challenge for ninth graders.
